Costs use Zerodha's published equity-delivery charges: ₹0 brokerage, STT 0.1% on buy and on sell, stamp duty 0.015% on buy,
NSE transaction charges, SEBI fees, 18% GST on those charges, and a ₹15.93 DP charge when selling. Nifty trades are treated as a Nifty index fund at the index level. Shorts use the same charges, which are a little higher than real futures costs.
For a short, "beat the Nifty" means the stock did better than shorting the Nifty would have.
Prices are end-of-day only, so this suits trades held for days or weeks. Paper results leave out slippage and the pressure of real money, so real results are usually a little worse.
